So I've now been here for 2 years. I was driving home from work the other day and realized that I have officially become one of "those" drivers. It was then I started noticing all the things that I now consider normal and the list began.
You know you've been in the Gulf too long when...
1. You believe that speed limits are only advisory.
2. You no longer wait in line but go immediately to the front, which can sometimes be one deep and three thousand wide.
3. You understand why huge 4x4s must slow down to a snail's pace while crossing a speed bump yet hurtle through a light at 100 kph.
4. You think that "Howareyou" is one word. So is "Mamsir"
5. You think it perfectly normal to have a picnic in the middle of a roundabout at 11pm
6. You get used to using the cold water tap to get hot water during the summer.
7. You make left turns from the far right lane without a second thought.
8. You think Pepsi begins with a "B"
9. You find that it saves time to stand and retrieve your carry on from
the overhead compartments while the plane is making it's final landing approach.
10. You regard it as part of the adventure, when the waiter repeats your
order exactly but the cook makes something completely different.
11. You are no longer surprised when three men with a ladder arrive to change a light bulb.
12. You never say Saturday instead of Friday or Sunday instead of Saturday anymore.
13. You send friends a map instead of your address.
14. You think that the further you inch into the middle of an intersection, the faster the light on the other side will turn green.
15. Seeing guys welcome each other with a kiss and hold hands while walking no longer distracts you.
16. You carry 12 passport size photos around with you just in case.
17. You can tell the time by listening to the local mosque.
18. Phrases like 'potato peeler', 'dish washer', 'coffee maker' and 'fly swatter' are no longer household items but are actually job titles.
19. You start to say "Insha'allah" when you actually mean "No chance!"
20. A problem with your car AC or horn is more serious to you than a problem with the brakes.
