A friend and I were talking about Iftar (إفطار), referring to the evening meal for breaking the daily fast during the Islamic month of Ramadan. And we decided that they should have Iftar songs like we have Christmas songs...so here is something we came up with. It might give you an idea of what it is like just before the breaking of the fast.
Taxi Horns
(Song to the theme of Silver Bells)
Taxi horns, Car hornsIt’s iftar time in the city
Beep, beep, beep hear them beep
Soon it will be iftar time
City sidewalks, busy sidewalks dress in Ramadan style
In the air there’s the smell from the kitchens
Children laughing, people passing running mile after mile
And on every street corner you hear…
Strings of street lights even stop lights blink the bright red and green
As the Muslims rush home for their dinners
Hear the mosque call, see the men brawl this is just the first day
And above all this bustle you hear…
Taxi horns, the neighbors up above
Car horns, are eating just because
It’s iftar time in the city
Beep, beep, beep it fills the dusty air
Hear them beep, you hear it every where
Soon it will be iftar time
Iftar
(the Chipmunk Christmas Song theme)
Iftar, Iftar time is here
Time for joy and time for cheer
We've been good, but we can't last
Hurry Iftar, hurry fast
Want a plate of dates and juice
Me I want to eat Makboos
We can hardly stand the wait
Oh, Iftar don't be late
